Sports Helmet Safety
Wear a Lid ~ Save a Kid (or a Dancer)By Rick Allen, DC
A helmet is used in many sports where there is a likelyhood of head and neck injury, such as bicycling, football, hockey, ski racing, etc. Seventy-five percent of bicycling fatalities are caused by head injuries. Bicyclists hospitalized with head injuries are 20 times as likely to die. Everyone should wear a helmet when cycling. Oregon law requires that children under 16 must wear helmets. For just $5 you can get a helmet through Trauma Nurses Talk Tough at Legacy Emanuel Hospital (503) 413-4960, in Portland, Oregon.
When learning and practicing dangerous dance moves, such as lifts and drops, consider using a helmet! The head and neck you save may be your own! For further information, see this month's article.
