Tip to Prevent Sprained Ankles

By Dr. Rick Allen, DC

Coming back to Argentine Tango that was the subject of the May 2002 article, my teacher, Dan Timmins, gave me a tip that will help prevent sprained ankles – get my foot out of the way when turning the lady. My first response was, "Duh! Of course I would move my foot so that I wouldn’t trip the lady. Thanks so obvious." Well it may be obvious, but it takes practice to perfect my timing so as to quickly move my foot just an inch or so out of the way when doing a check step.

The same point applies to any partner dance, so, guys, practice getting your feet out of the way. Avoid twisting the ankle of your lady. She will, obviously, be grateful.

Our June 2002 article also has information.
